"An autopsy of history would show that all great nations commit suicide."

Arnold J. Toynbee, Historian (1889-1975)

Patriotism is a good value which makes people proud of their own country and loyal to their flag. However, this pride and loyalty can be confused with pride and loyalty toward the government, and therein lies the danger. A massive propaganda machine like the mass media today can exploit patriotism to eliminate dissent and establish absolute power or fascism. In a recent speech, actor Tim Robbins said: “If you oppose this administration there can and will be ramifications. Every day the airwaves are filled with warnings, veiled and unveiled threats, spewed invective and hatred directed at any voice of dissent. And the public, like so many relatives and friends that I saw this weekend, sit in mute opposition and in fear.”

While true support for the troops means to support their right to come back home and not die for unjust wars, the propaganda machine would have you believe that dissent means betrayal of troops and endangering their lives. In reality, those who betray them are the ones that want others to die for them, and endanger their lives by sending them in harm’s way to begin with.

Which brings us to the hypocrite Congress of millionaires which votes for unjust wars, to send other people’s sons and other people’s money to fight for their own interests. Their masters are the global corporations which value war profiteering above human life. A recent survey showed that out of 535 members of Congress, only one had a relative in the army. Most of the top leaders have never been to war. When Dick Cheney was asked why he did not serve in Vietnam he said: “I had other priorities”.

Norman Solomon wrote:

“Mark Twain was painfully aware of many people's inclinations to go along with prevailing evils. When slavery was lawful, he recalled, abolitionists were "despised and ostracized, and insulted" -- by "patriots." As far as Twain was concerned, "Loyalty to petrified opinion never yet broke a chain or freed a human soul." For being anti-imperialist, Twain was accused of being anti-American. Solomon wrote: “’Particularly in his later years,‘ scholar Tom Quirk has noted, ‘the fierceness of Twain's anti-imperialist convictions disturbed and dismayed those who regarded him as the archetypal American citizen who had somehow turned upon Americanism itself.’ "

While the West has a very short memory, the East never forgets. Tim Wise wrote:
“victims have long memories, while the powerful have the luxury--or at least think they do--of forgetting”.

What defeats an invader with superior power is not his lack of power, but Time. The suicide bombers, the insults and stones, the hundred degree days in the desert, the soldier who misses his home and sees the futility and wickedness of his mission. Time separates those who love the land from those who exploit the land. This is why the “hearts and minds” of those who own the land are never for sale.

Almost no one mourns the fall of Saddam Hussein, as almost no one mourned the fall of many other made-in-USA thugs who were converted from local bullies to powerful dictators by the USA to plunder their country and murder its citizens. The list goes on and on: Marcos, Noriega. Somoza, Shah Reza Pahlavi, Pinochet, Pol Pot, Batista, Suharto, and many others. As long as they were our thugs playing to our fiddle not only we looked the other way but we gave them more support. Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Ladin were grown to be monsters by the USA from their early twenties. Needless to say without USA support they would be no more than older thugs today.

As the root of arrogance is ignorance _it is not by chance that they rhyme_ the root of hypocrisy and racism is double standards. What applies to “brave” and “free” Americans and what applies to the rest of the world are two different things. "Those barbarians hate freedom and good standard of living and that is why they are attacking us for our way of life, since we did nothing to hurt them. They started it all."
If American planes drop thousands of bombs on cities, that is war. If they take revenge by killing us, that is terrorism.

And speaking of bravery, who is more brave? Mass murderer colonialist Tommy Franks who landed in Baghdad protected by American tanks or the “terrorist” who blew up his body to fight against occupation? The former came to visit Saddam’s palace and proudly smoked a cigar to celebrate his “victory” after sending the deadliest army in the world ahead of him, while the latter would be a hero in any freedom-loving person’s mind.

The victor in a war not only writes its history but he demands compensation for the losses. This is true even if the victor was the invader who was not acting in self-defense. And here comes the double standard. Iraq invades Kuwait and is defeated by USA, so it is forced to pay some $200 billion dollars in compensation for Kuwaiti victims. Yet what about the victims of the so-called collateral damage caused by the invader USA or the victims of the sanctions? Are they not entitled to compensation as well? What about the destruction of most of Iraq’s infrastructure and its heritage? And what about the damage caused by USA invasions for the last 200 years? As there is our thug and their thug, apparently there is our victim and their victim, our justice and their justice. God help you if you are on the “other” side of the USA.

Indeed, the magic of language in the mouths of liars is amazing. Now anyone in the world fighting oppressive regimes supported by USA using violent means is conveniently called a terrorist. Many of the founders of this country would be called terrorists today. As it is wrong to attack civilians anywhere, who is fighting for a nobler cause? The American soldier who becomes a mercenary to fight in an illegal invasion and occupation, or the one who blows himself up without any earthly rewards to free his people from the invaders who are by far superior in strength? Bush and his gang have achieved what no invader of Iraq has for thousands of years, including the terrible Mongols: The destruction of Iraq’s and the world’s 7,000 year old heritage. We now see the true fingerprints of a lying invader: Oil and Intelligence. The first to plunder the country and the second to eliminate the enemies of Israel and to install the next made-in-USA thugs in the region.
