Hayrapetyan participated at Budapest International Festival in 1986, Zagreb Music Biennale in 1991, Sweden Festival in 1992, Greece Festival in 1998, “Prima Vista” festivals in Odessa in 1998 and 1999. His compositions were performed in Armenia, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, Baltic States, The Czech Republic, Sweden, Canada, Germany, USA, Lebanon, Switzerland, France. His first Symphony was premiered in Poland. In 1999 and 2000 he was a Grant holder of Studio International “Denkmalschmiede Hoefgen’ (Germany).

The Ukrainian composer of contemporary classical music Valentin Silvestrov said of Hayrapetyan’s music: “I believe that his music, which flows out of his noble heart, finds its true echo in that certain human being who is sensitive and caring toward life".

“The expressionist language of his music is a product of his interest in the phenomenology of the human personality and the existential cognition of the world. The serial method he used in early works is largely remote from that of the Second Viennese School; it involves the harmonic and melodic variation of pithy motifs whilst maintaining their intervallic structure (“Oratorio - 1915”). At the beginning of the 1980s his language metamorphosed under the influence of late Shostakovich and Lutoslawski; the dramatic plan of his works – previously based on a shifting texture – became more stable, and his growing tendency to a modernized Romanticism led to new stylistic elements such as distinguishable tonal zones and triads, use of diminished chords with chromatic voice leading and a heightened attention to melody.”

EDUARD HAYRAPETYAN, COMPOSER

Eduard Hayrapetyan is an Armenian composer of contemporary classical music. He was born in Yerevan, Armenia, on September 5, 1949. He first studied composition at the Melikian Music College under Grigor Akhinian (1966-68) and then under Grigor Yeghiazarian at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory (1968-73). He joined the Armenian Composers Union in 1976.
